Migrations? Easy with NonStop and you can take that to the bank!

You move house and it’s traumatic; you migrate systems and it is less so – with NonStop system migrations, what to consider next? When we moved into our home in Windsor, Colorado, a small village to the east of Ft Collins, we focused on the actual move itself. Our primary goal was to transition furnishings from one home to the next whether they were right for the new space or not. Perhaps even more fundamentally, did the furnishing even worked with the new home’s layout? Looking back such a migration that focused on just the home and keeping all else the same ultimately saved us a lot of headaches. When it comes to migrating systems, much the same can be said about such a move. As the first stage in any planning session, keeping the current operating environment intact always seems to be the smart move. Get it all across to the new system then step back and see what is needed and what really contributes to the day-to-day operations. Trying to juggle a move to new hardware together wi...

For the NonStop community, news is good; I will take that!

Whether you are looking for news about NonStop, NS SQL, GreenLake, a cloud experience and more, it is hard to overlook just how well HPE is performing in the marketplace. The news certainly looks good for Nonstop in 2021. In former times, it was the town crier we relied upon for the news of the day. It therefore comes as no surprise to hear that down through history,     such news was often misconstrued. Semantics, emphasis, a wrongly placed punctuation mark can play havoc with what may have been communicated. I am always encouraging my readers to check things out for themselves as my take on the news may differ from what you read elsewhere. Indeed, I will take that as a complement should you follow the links I provide in many of my posts. When HPE released its financial results for Q1, 2021, the response was mixed to say the least. There was good news reported by HPE CEO Antonio Neri even as there were some declines in sales for some products within the HPE product portfoli...

Regaining our composure; watching for signs!

Attending virtual events with more to come, the signs suggest that this is now normal; have you composed yourself ahead of what’s to come? I have to admit, when this image came to me in a tweet, it brought a smile to my face. Who else but the local authorities in San Jose would have come up with this, based on the expectation that travelers in their city would understand the reference. Given all that is happening around us in these times, it’s pleasing to see that at least one authority retains a sense of humor. On the other hand, I am sure it had the desired effect. Silicon Valley will always have its detractors but it is with signs like this that the human side of technology comes through, resonating with us all. We didn’t make it up to Silicon Valley on our last trip to California; Monterey was as far north as our time allowed. It’s unusual for us to skip an opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues but I wanted to make sure I was back in time to wrap up assignments before...

On the road, again – NonStop delivers yet again!

Hybrid IT, Clouds and transition from CapEx to OpEx – what’s it all mean for the new NonStop? There is always a degree of uncertainty whenever we head out onto America’s highways at this time of year. Will we be troubled by bad weather and road closures? Will road maintenance disrupt our plans in any way? Could there be mechanical failures of one kind or another? Driving to California means we had to traverse both the Rockies and the Sierras and with the uncertainty of fall conditions, this means we had to take the all-wheel-drive SUV. In the past, even in such a vehicle we have been tested by heavy snowfalls west of Truckee. There was a time when even our Jeep SRT8 struggled to stay the course when the snow on the highway turned to ice. But not this time! Apart from dealing with blowing snow in Wyoming – when doesn’t it blow in Wyoming? – our crossing of Interstate 80 was uneventful and “pumpkin” (our nickname for our Range Rover) never put a foot wrong. Oftentimes,...
