Where I stand with you?

Remember the words from that song long ago by the New Jersey band, The Young Rascals? One of their most popular releases of the late 1960s? For many of my readers it may well be the case of “perhaps not!”, but the song How Can I be Sure might be viewed as topical when addressing the HPE NonStop Community. In particular, the opening verse: How can I be sure In a world that's constantly changing? How can I be sure Where I stand with you? For the NonStop vendor community, the talk of the day is about ecosystems. It’s about the creation of software partnerships that are themselves ecosystems. Viable alternatives to other ecosystems that perhaps have come about a bit like topsy – “growing quickly without being noticed.” It has become less of a secret of late that, following the unveiling of partnerships by the NonStop team as a direct result of its Showcase initiative, those NonStop vendors not participating in Showcase are coming to terms with a landscape that is very much chan...

Have we stopped worrying? Yes, John, we are serious!

Walking into my office the only thought I had on my mind was how the year was coming to an end. I distinctly recall getting an early night New Year’s Eve 2020 and yet, here we are and 2021 is drawing to an end. It is also pretty easy to remark over how different 2021 had been to what was predicted two, three years ago. Remember the pundits writing about the coming doom that will overwhelm us and it had nothing to do with the global pandemic? Leave it to the predictions of the French philosopher Michel de Nostradamus (who some think has been “freakishly accurate”) when he wrote of “World-ending asteroids, zombies and ruinous famine are on deck for 2021.” In response I can only repeat the most famous words of the American tennis ace John McEnroe, “you cannot be serious?” Renowned for his on-court theatrical outbursts, we all learnt to love the guy in time. However, it is another image that perhaps sums up the year better than others and it is of the British actor Peter Sellers when he ...

Dashboards; one way to view future of NonStop

The HPE NonStop team launches Showcase; GreenLake participation under way! Could you see it all displayed on a dashboard near you? There is very little similarity between the interfaces to motor vehicle produced in the 1950s and what is now part of the interface we see in vehicles manufactured today. Similarly, looking at photos of aircraft cockpits of the 1950s and then at what we find today in the cockpits of modern planes highlights how far we have come in terms of dashboards. My first flights aboard early jetliners had flight decks so complex with its many dials and switches that it was occupied by more than one pilot, a flight engineer and in some instances, a navigator. Now that we have glass dashboards in our cars, most of which have become touch sensitive, where any number of instruments can be displayed as motorists we are entering a period of information overload. How many displays make sense and do we really know what they are telling us? More often than not, dials are set...
