The bright lights of California are calling; see you in Monterey!

A post late last year following NonStop TBC 2023:   “Wherever travel takes Margo and me, I often take photos at that location. A reminder of where we have been and  a way to start conversations with family and friends.”   With the upcoming NonStop Technical Boot Camp 2024 (NonStopTBC24) being a matter of only a few days away, travel continues to dominate the conversations at home. This year, we drove our SUV from Florida to Colorado where we prepped for the conference completing, as was needed to do, the presentation I will be giving on Tuesday, 9/24/2024, at 1:30PM. Will I see you there? Sure hope so – it will be new and will tackle a couple of interesting developments within the NonStop community. Ingenuity? It is certainly taking center stage as the modernization of NonStop continues. Colorado, however, was just a midpoint in our trip to Monterey, California. Preparation completed to drive to Monterey; it was a case of loading our sports car for the trip to the...

Taking decisive actions

Nothing too surprising running across this sign other than thinking more about where it was placed. A pleasant enough location you would think but hiding a secret albeit wrapped in a little humor. Situated close to the Intracoastal Waterway along the Florida panhandle, it fronts a small dock in a marshy estuary tidal known to be frequented by Alligators. Having already overheard locals advising holiday makers not to enter this part of the waterway to paddleboard, clearly strapped into a kayak makes a whole lot more sense. Like going in for kabobs made up of cubes of meat pierced by a stick came to mind. As an Australian who has spent time in Queensland’s far north, we know all too well the unpredictive nature of the local giant salt-water crocodiles, I have a healthy respect for these reptiles, be that alligators or crocodiles and there is nothing indecisive about me thinking about mucking about with boats this close to where sightings have occurred. With Hurricane Debby having m...

Feeling good out on the edge, are we?

HPE is committed to becoming a significant player in edge to core; will we see NonStop contributing to both edge and core? It was just about two years ago that Margo and I spent a week in Munich. It was kind of a rushed trip but we wanted to catch up with former business colleagues from the time when we both worked for the former Nixdorf Computers. That was the time when Nixdorf made a full range of products from key-to-disk data entry systems to retail and banking terminals, including ATMs, a PABX system and yes, even a plug-compatible mainframe. This I covered in the post of March 31, 2019 Living on the edge , a post that was widely read at the time. Not sure if it was the reference to Munich, to wintery conditions, to Nixdorf and IBM or whether it was the reference to edge computing but it included an important reference to quotes of the day by HPE CEO, Antonio Neri that continue to resonate with Margo and me to this day. “Edge computing means that ‘millions of clouds will ...

My paper chase; all for a view of the big picture!

Roadmaps always receive a lot of attention whenever products are being discussed particularly among NonStop community members. However, when was the last time we took stock of the bigger picture for HPE NonStop systems? What began with a simple question ended up involving much more than I had anticipated! Conversations, checking under couch cushions, web searches and even visits to the local gas station. For a very long time now I have been using a yellow Hi-Liter pen to record the many North American highways Margo and I have traversed, but as we make plans for further travels this year and begin to think about packing our bags once again, I couldn’t find the marked map! Somehow our filing and retrieval system let us down – no way would we have thrown away that piece of memorabilia? After the conversations had run their course I thought it best if I just get another map and start over, but where to get a map? What I needed was a simple fold-out map of the US and Canada that included a...

The future came quickly … enjoying the ride?

Predictions! Vision! Schedules! All have been subject to change; impacted by the spread of COVID-19. Read how HPE investments in NonStop have helped NonStop to better pivot into support of core and edge initiatives …   I have to say I am not sure whether we have seen our eleventh snow storm of the season or whether it’s a continuation of the ninth. For the past couple of weeks snow has been falling on most days but perhaps more disturbing for someone who grew up close by to the beaches of Sydney, Australia, was the bitter cold that draped its arms across it all. Living in Colorado you would think we are used to the cold, but not really. We have our days, of course, but watching the thermometer drop below -20 Fahrenheit is always cause for alarm. There were no concerns over whether we had enough food and drink at hand as COVID-19 has made us cautious about our supply chain – trips to the grocery store were all to do with ensuring we always have a month plus of everything we needed...

Changing our perspective; what develops will be good!

HPE Discover is always an occasion that the NonStop community looks forward to and with the event going virtual, HPE met our expectations … One of the benefits of living in Colorado is that the weather is truly a hit or miss circumstance. For the past week we have ventured out into morning sunshine only to be pelted a few hours later by heavy rain and yes, hail. Whether it’s ducking back into stores that happen to be open or jumping into our vehicles it doesn’t really make a difference. Living in Colorado, alongside the Rocky Mountains, means making adjustments quickly in response to changing circumstances no matter what plans were in place. And yet, after checking with the locals, apparently Colorado enjoys more sunny days than just about any place else in USA. Among the many changes of circumstance that the global pandemic has brought about is that for Information Technologists the big-tent marketing events put on by major vendors have undergone change that will likely...

Looking beyond the edge; NonStop becomes “First Processor!”

NonStop has always done a good job when it comes to product roadmap presentations and at ETBC, Scotland we are all looking forward to hearing the next presentation It was many years ago that a group of Tandem developers took a side excursion to Grand Canyon. There had been an industry conference on networking, but in between the conclusion of the event and the scheduled flight home, we all elected to take in the sites of this natural wonder. As we walked from one viewing area to the next there was always an opportunity to look over the edge and of course, I have to admit, this old grainy photograph is of me taking a look! Wanting to know more about what is just out of sight is always of interest to us all and even as there may be risks involved, it’s always a lot better to know what is just beyond the horizon or, in this case, on the  other side of the edge. When it comes to IT there is always a premium paid for information describing what will likely happen next and it is...

First light – winter’s last gasp!

Reengaging with the NonStop community as changes to NonStop keep on coming may still be a challenge and yet, they’re hold promise for those with the skills learnt on NonStop! Woke up the other day to an eerie glow emanating from a frozen landscape as winter reminded us all that while the calendar said spring, it wasn’t done with us, just yet! Living alongside Colorado’s famous Rocky Mountains there is always something going on and as much as I shivered and pulled on warmer clothes, in its own way winter was providing a beautiful spectacle. It didn’t last long. It never really does around here. As the temperature climbed into the high 40s, the snow quickly melted away and perhaps it will be eight or nine months before we see anything similar again. On the other hand, maybe we are speaking too soon.   Having returned from our trip to Munich, Germany, it’s now time to plan for Edinburgh, Scotland. The premier user event for the European community is only a few short wee...
